OPINIONS OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL Attorney General Latham Castle in an official opinion has held that Illinois counties have the authority to tax coin operated amusement devices even though such devices are located within a city, village or incorporated town. However, Castle's opinion held, imposition of such a tax by a county would not authorize operation of any device or pinball machine in a city, village or incorporated town which prohibits such a device nor does the statute permitting such a tax authorize operation of any pinball or other device which would fall within the prohibitions of the statute prohibiting gambling devices.
