Wayne H. Poppenhager, Astoria City Clerk and auto salesman, was awarded a $2,500 U.S. Savings Bond as 3rd place winner in a nation-wide slogan competition among Chevrolet salesmen. - - - Whether to establish an Effingham airport authority will be decided June 24 in a special election. - - - Mayor and Mrs. W. H. Schafer, Creal Springs, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 81st. - - -In six years, the Village of Oreana has doubled its population—from 201 to 416. - - - River Forest held a civic celebration on May 23 to commemorate completion of a new modern lighting system along Lake Street. - - - On August 6th, the Village of Round Lake will open its Golden Jubilee, marking a half-century of progress in the Village. - - - Mayor Edward L. Spellmon, Lincoln, is recipient of the Silver Antelope Award, given for his outstanding activities in Boy Scout work. - - - The City Council at Jerseyville has taken the first step to establish zoning for the community. - - - Mayor Norman E. Wolfer, Pekin, has been named President of the Tazewell County Mayors Association, succeeding Mayor Donald Guedet, Washington. - - - Mayor Thomas Sweeney, Taylorville, has announced plans for a June 27th celebration to mark the installation of the city's new downtown street lights. - - - Evidence of drought conditions in Lake County have brought restrictions of water use in at least two municipalities: Deerfield and Round Lake Beach. ---Off-street parking programs continue to draw attention from Illinois municipalities. Recent developments include: Bloomington, the city council has approved a program to consist of 5 lots containing 450 spaces estimated to cost $1,250,000; Taylorville council approved $85,000 for a parking lot; De Kalb—two new lots at a cost of $140,000; Rock-ford—council approved $8,750,000 revenue bond issue to develop 8 off-street lots; Champaign, the city manager is to report in June upon the feasibility of a multi-level garage for that city. - - - Evanston's new budget again calls for cooperative support for its city planning for the third year. A contribution of $2,000 each from the Evanston Chamber of Commerce, Northwestern University and two public school districts, the city will finance the rest of the budget of $34,380. It is felt that the voluntary financial contributions give these other groups an active interest in an advisory capacity in city planning. - - - Elmhurst has begun negotiations to acquire land needed to permit straightening of parts of Salt Creek within the corporate limits. - - - Bloomington has zoned a 35-acre tract for development as a $4 million 40-store shopping center.
Appointments and Resignations Norman Litz has been named Fire Chief, Waukegan. He was a member of the fire department for 22 years prior to his resignation in 1956. - - -

Edward F. Holmes, Granite City Police Chief for 7 years, retired June 1st. Raymond Willaredt has been appointed the new Chief. - - - Sam Luoma has been appointed Fire Chief, DeKalb. - - - Robert A. Grohne is Decatur's new civil defense chief, succeeding- Col. William A. Arnold. - - - Robert J. Lindgren was recently seated as a Village Trustee in Lincolnshire, succeeding Edward W. Lines, who resigned. - - - Fire Chief Robert Watson, Monmouth, has resigned. - - - Beling Engineers, Moline, have been appointed city engineers by the Green Rock City Council. - - - Mrs. H. L. Pranger has been appointed City Treasurer, Carrollton. - - - Luther Cummins, Greenfield, has resigned as Superintendent of the Waterworks. - - - Fred Turner, Village Trustee, Mundelein, has resigned. - - - Samuel Basan has left his post as Granite City recreation director to become Joliet's new superintendent of parks and recreation. - - - Henry L. Falconio, Jr., has been appointed Fire Chief, Westville. He succeeds John E. Gerrib, who will continue to be a member of the Department as a regular fireman. - - - Orville E. Meyer, City Manager, Galena, has resigned to accept a position as first manager of Hillsdale, Michigan. - - - F. Robert Buechner has resigned as Village Manager, Arlington Heights. - - - George Sodeman, Champaign, has been named City Engineer, Watseka.
Bond Issues
Citizens in all three wards in Auburn voted down a proposition to form a recreation district and construct a $70,000 swimming pool, while voters went to the polls in 80-degree heat to authorize a bond issue for a $75,000 swimming pool in Grayville. - - -By a vote of 118 to 2, Modesto citizens approved a $20,000 bond issue for financing a municipal waterworks system. Total project cost: $85,000. - - -Hardin voters approved by a 190 to 11 vote, $40,000 issue to improve the streets. - - - Mound City council has approved purchase of the local water and light company for $385,000. The proposition will be submitted to referendum. - - - Round Lake Beach voters approved the purchase of the community's water company for $316,000. - - - Mendota has sold $340,000 in waterworks and sewage revenue bonds at an interest rate of 3.28%. - - - Waterloo voters approved $167,000 in general obligation bonds to supplement $200,000 in revenue bonds to purchase additional electric generating equipment. - - - Herrin voters passed a $135,000 G.O. issue for a public library. - - - Millstadt village board approved an ordinance appropriating $291,300 including $125,000 for a new municipal building.
