Award for Lippold John A. Lippold joined a distinct group of Aurora citizens recently when he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the Cosmopolitan Club of Aurora. The award is made annually to a local citizen who has made outstanding public contributions "above and beyond the call of duty." He was cited for giving unselfishly of himself, his time and efforts, in building the character of thousands of boys and girls through the many recreation programs under his direction. He does not limit his time to youth work, however, having programs for all ages in the Park District's many activities, including a special interest in Senior Citizens. His success has brought national attention and honor to the City of Aurora. The Mid-America Canoe Race and National Field Archery Tournament under his direction are two events which have gained national prominence. The award was presented by the Cosmopolitan Club president Dr. Walter A. Sperry. W. L. "Les" McCullough, president of the local park district, and an award winner himself in 1953, presented the major address of the evening. From 1947 through 1962 Lippold was recreation director for the playground and recreation department for the City of Aurora. Since 1963, when the recreation department became a part of the activities of the Fox River Valley Pleasure Driveway and Park District, he has served as superintendent of recreation for that organization. The presentation was made before a capacity crowd at the spacious Stardust Ballroom in Aurora. Illinois Parks and Recreation 9 January/February 1971 |
