Arbor Day Promoted
The Illinois Park & Recreation Society and Illinois Association of Park Districts actively promoted Arbor Day again this year. The Honorable Governor Richard B. Ogilvie issued a proclamation early in March pointing out the importance of trees to the human environment. He also was present for the planting of a tree in Arlington Heights on March 16th, which was another promotional method used to draw attention to Arbor Day 1972.
Efforts of the Illinois Association of Park Districts towards Arbor Day were coordinated through Bob Nichols of Bensenville who is chairman of the Community Relations Committee for the Association. In Memoriam The Naperville Community and Park and Recreation officials throughout Illinois were saddened by the death of Dr. Lester J. Schloerb on February 29, 1972. For 55 years he was a part of the community of Naperville, having graduated from North Central College in 1919 and raised his family in this far western suburb of Chicago. The life of Dr. Schloerb was highly distinguished with an unsurpassed quantity and quality of public service, having served his community in innumerable capacities, and modes, including: service on the Board of Trustees of North Central College from 1939 to 1954; president of the Naperville Park District since the District's founding in 1966 during which time said park district rose to standards of excellence recognized nationally; president of the Board of Education of the Naperville Public Schools for 16 years; member of the YMCA Board of Directors; and active in numerous other civic activities. His services to mankind transcended far beyond his community, including positions as Associate Superintendent of the Chicago Public Schools, with 41 years of service to that school system; and including service as a teacher and supervisor of teacher interns of Northwestern University; and as Secretary of the International YMCA in Bucharest, Romania; and as an author of books in the field of vocational guidance and in the service of his country in the Armed Forces during World War I.
