Training For Professional Growth

1974 IPRS WORKSHOPS

WORKSHOP NO. 1
The Professional Mystique
OAK PARK, April 9

The professional mystique is a seminar designed to inform participants of the various career patterns in the field of Parks and Recreation. Participants will learn of ways to progress up the administrative ladder. Introspection is the key to this seminar. Participants will be evaluating themselves while learning of the success of others.

Speakers will address themselves to the realities of the profession. Pros and cons of career types will be discussed. Opportunities for parks and recreation professionals outside of the community will be enumerated. The roles of women in the field will be reviewed. What makes a good Park Superintendent will be discussed. How to operate a one-man district will be covered. If these topics sound varied; they are. But so are the leaders of the Parks and Recreation profession. You too can become a leader and a part of the professional mystique.

Speakers will be: Jim Brademas, Pres. City Planning Associates; Jim Ball, Director of Rosselle Park District; Angela Capulli, Supt. of Parks, Arlington Heights Park Dist.; Carl Fuerst, Exec. V. P., McFaddzean & Everly, Ltd.; Sandra Little, Rec. Supv., Park Ridge.

Chairperson of the Oak Park Workshop

Emphasis is placed on active participation in the learning process. The entire morning will be taken up by a series of learning exercises directed by Dr. Gunn.

WORKSHOP NO. 3
Public-Private Contracts

. . . A park district has not completed development of a piece of property. They are approached by private interests who offer to develop a facility and operate on a lease basis. What are the ramifications of this offer? . . .

The Hinsdale Workshop will develop dialogue between top level managers, legal counselors, and commercial representatives. The concentration will be on developing cooperative arrangements between the private and public sectors. The Committee encourages any agency to respond by March 10, to Ross Ricks, 101 S. A STUDY IN "TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH"

The 1974 Workshops are designed to increase professional knowledge and growth. Rather than emphasizing mechanical formulas or tools for implementing programs, these sessions have been planned to stimulate personal creativity and understanding, and to broaden professional concepts.

All workshops are open to any participant, no matter what his immediate area of concern may be. Workshops will provide insight into all levels of the parks and recreation profession.

The subject matter of these sessions ranges from the general overview of No. 1 to the specific inquiry of No. 3. Workshop No. 1 is an introduction to a variety of areas in recreation for the young professional, while No. 2 is of great importance to every person concerned with the dynamics of human interaction. Workshop No. 3 is an in-depth treatment of a technical management problem.

I.P.R.S. members are urged to attend all or several sessions for their professional enrichment; pre-registration fees have been reduced to $10 to encourage your total involvement in this year's program. (At-the-door registration fee remains $20.)
