Deaths
Otto Kerner, former Illinois governor, of
lung cancer at a Chicago hospital in May.
Kerner, 67, had also served as a judge on the
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals before his
conviction for bribery in connection with the
purchase of race track stock. (For an
appraisal of Kerner's legislative
achievements, see "The state of the State,"
p. 25.)
Former state Rep. James J. Adduci, 82, in
Newport Richey, Fla., on April 21. He
served in the legislature from 1934 to 1952
and from 1954 to 1956.
Other
Republican gubernatorial candidate
James Thompson, 40, and Jayne Ann Carr,
30, both from Oak Park, announced their
wedding for June 19 at St. James' Cathedral
in Chicago. She is an assistant Illinois
attorney general. The couple met in 1967 during a
criminal law class taught by Thompson at
Northwestern University.
Associate Circuit Court Judge William D.
Vanderwater, Aurora, was removed from
the bench for official misconduct by the
Illinois Courts Commission on April 26. ž
