included teaching and administrative posts in southern Illinois public schools, division chairman in the supervisory department of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1935 to 1943, director of professional and public relations for the Illinois Education Association from 1943 to 1960, and a staff member in the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1960 to 1963. HonorsBig Bend Nature Preserve has been renamed in honor of Margery C. Carlson by the Illinois Nature Preserve Commission. Dr. Carlson, the first woman on the regular faculty at Northwestern University, was an assistant professor of botany for 30 years until her retirement in 1959. As secretary of the Illinois Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, her efforts played an important role in saving more than a dozen valuable natural areas since 1952. State Rep. Peggy Smith Martin (D., Chicago) was invited to participate in a forum on World Peace sponsored by the World Congress of Peace in Moscow, U.S.S.R., January 14-17. Cubs power-hitter, shortstop and first
baseman was elected to the Hall of Fame by
10-year members of the Baseball Writers
Association of America January 19. Banks is
the eighth player in history to be elected to
the Hall of Fame in his first year of
eligibility.
An official color guard of sailors and
marines from Illinois were on hand for the
launching of the States Ship Illinois from the
Bath Iron Works in Bath, Me., on December
18. The Illinois State Museum Society
donated an official Illinois state flag to be
displayed aboard the ship.
