This issue of Illinois Parks and Recreation reflects ideas and approaches by a new editorial team. There are several new features and a changed layout. One of the features is this column, which in the future will be devoted to special views of the editors on a variety of topics. The purpose this time, however, is to introduce the editorial team and explain briefly how it came into being.

Action toward changing the editorship of Illinois Parks and Recreation began early in the fall of 1978 when the IPRA Board of Directors and Kay Forest, Executive Director of IPRA, determined that the time Kay spent in editing the magazine could better be spent in other Association activities. A decision was made by the IAPD-IPRA Joint Editorial Board to "farm out" the editorship, and volunteers were interviewed at the Annual Conference. Ultimately, it was decided that the editorial duties would be shared by representatives of the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University — C.

Meanwhile, the IAPD Board of Directors hired Bob Artz as their Executive Director. Bob expressed great interest in all aspects of the magazine's operation, and was assuming the role of Managing Editor when he was tragically lost in the late May airline crash at O'Hare Field. Kay Forest then quickly agreed to step into the Managing Editor position, at least until a new IAPD executive could be hired.

Kay Kastel Forest has served as Executive Secretary or Executive Director of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (formerly Society) since 1973. She has edited the joint IAPD-IPRA magazine from 1973 through the July/August 1979 issue. Prior to that she served as Assistant Director of Recreation for the Glenview Park District. A graduate of Western Illinois University, Kay plays an active role in professional and related civic organizations. Her leisure interests include golf, sailing and hiking. She is also known as an enthusiastic dancer.

John Allen, also Associate Editor, a native of Carbondale, received his B.S. degree in therapeutic recreation, a master's degree in park administration, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education, all from Southern Illinois University. John teaches in the area of general recreation and has published numerous articles and one textbook. A special professional interest is teaching a leisure awareness course to between 600 and 900 non-recreation major students each semester. He also enjoys sailing with his family on Crab Orchard Lake, and a variety of other leisure activities.

The editorial team works closely with the IAPD-IPRA Joint Editorial Board in planning and managing the magazine. They rely on strong support from organization members and other interested readers for submission of appropriate articles and features. Information for would-be writers can be found on page 37.

Robert P. Humke, Community Recreation Specialist, Office of Recreation and Park Resources, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, assumes the duties of Editor. Long active in Illinois park and recreation professional endeavors. Bob formerly (1967-72) served as Superintendent of Recreation for the Peoria Park District. Although new to the duties of magazine editing, he has written extensively, including a long promised but yet unpublished book on citizen involvement in community park planning. His interest in running and Masters' track competition consumes considerable time and energy. Other leisure activities are many home and family pursuits, especially camping, canoeing, cross-country skiing and landscaping.

Leonard E. Cleary, Jr., one of two Associate Editors from Southern Illinois University — Carbondale, likes to pilot as well as parachute from small airplanes, although not simultaneously. Len also enjoys roller skating, competitive volleyball, and a variety of activites with his daughter Laura. An assistant professor specializing in therapeutic recreation, he is active throughout the state in conducting training workshops, and participates in numerous other professional activities. Prior to assuming his SIU position in 1978 Len served as Director of the Promise Day Treatment Center for mentally ill adults in Danville, Illinois. He has taught extensively at the University of Illinois and earned his Ph.D. there in 1978.
