LINCOLNFEST . . . ANOTHER PUBLIC AWARENESS PROJECT FOR IAPD "The Illinois Association of Park Districts was the first state association to step forward and offer assistance to the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau" stated Fred Puglia, Director of the Bureau and LincolnFest. Puglia continued, "We truly appreciated the cooperation and expertise offered by the Illinois Association of Park Districts in making LincolnFest a one-of-a-kind free family fun and pageantry unmatched in Illinois history." Over 100,000 people attended the July 4th and 5th extravaganza in celebration of Abraham Lincoln and our country's birthday. LincolnFest offered a variety of activities including: parades, street games, hot air balloons, national open fiddler's contest, ethnic foods, street dances, antique shows, dozens of performing street musicians, "Super Chicken", fireworks display, senior citizen street competition, historic tours, handicapped events, the world fast draw champions, yo-yo champion, and pushup champion; nationally known Steve Scearcy's Mark Twain and Harry Truman portrayals. There were over 70 major events in all. The IAPD sponsored the LincolnFest state-wide volleyball tournament for teams in co-rec, men and women categories. Teams entered the tournament from as far away as Waukegan. This will be an annual event for IAPD and the J.C. Penney Co. has agreed to financially support IAPD's efforts. Our thanks go out to the various cities and park districts who sent teams to Springfield in support of this great public awareness project. LEGISLATIVE AWARENESS DAY LEGISLATORS GOLF OUTING - BANQUET If you have not triple checked by now please get on the telephone today and make sure your legislator will be attending the Golf Outing and/or Banquet July 31st at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling. See IAPD . . . Page 25 Illinois Parks and Recreation 21 July/August 1981 IAPD . . . from page 21 Last year we had 36 legislators attend this event. We hope to increase the legislator participation number by a sizable margin this year. However, your assistance is essential. We are extremely appreciative of those legislators supporting our platform and this is one way we can show our appreciation. The Legislative Awareness Day is also designed to give you an opportunity to get to know your legislator . . . After all, it has been proven that a person's real character is revealed during relaxful participation in a recreational activity.
