People, Places, N Things J. Robert Rossman, Ph.D., has recently been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Leisure Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Serving as Community Recreation Specialist in the Office of Recreation and Park Resources, Dr. Rossman has been a Lecturer in the Department of Leisure Studies since 1975 responsible for teaching undergraduate courses and coordinating the Professional Practicum Program. In 1968, Dr. Rossman received the Bachelor of Science degree "With Distinction" from Indiana University in Park and Recreation Administration. His Masters degree (Leisure Studies) was completed in 1975 at University of Illinois as was his Doctorate of Philosophy in 1981, both in the Department of Leisure Studies. The focus of his research has been in leisure service evaluation theory, methods, and instrument development. Dr. Rossman began his professional career in 1968 as a National Recreation and Park Association Intern in the Oak Park Recreation Department, Oak Park, Illinois. He continued in this program until being appointed as Assistant Director of the Department in 1970. As Assistant Director, Dr. Rossman was responsible for the operation of seven neighborhood recreation centers and assisting with the administration of the department. He continued in this capacity until his 1975 appointment to the Department of Leisure Studies. Gary Watson has been appointed Superintendent of Recreation for the Morton Park District. Gary comes to Morton from the Normal Parks and Recreation Department where he has worked since 1975 as an Activities Specialist and Aquatics and Activities Supervisor. He is a 1975 graduate of Illinois State University, with a degree in Secondary Education. Gary has also served as the Aquatics Representative on the Special Facilities Section of the I.P.R.A.
Vicki L. Milligan, 24, of Richton Park, Illinois, has been named Recreation Supervisor for the Fox Valley Park District. In her new post, Milligan will be responsible for programming Senior Citizen activities, assisting in Special Events, and promoting new general programs of interest. She comes to the district from a post as an Assistant to the Manager of Community Recreation at the Schaumburg Park District Center. Her duties there involved total operation of a new center which included landscape design, fiscal management, inventory control, public relations, and programming of teen center. Senior center, and preschool programs. She was educated at Western Illinois University at Macomb where she received a degree in Park & Recreation Administration.
Greg Meyer, who was acting director and superintendent of leisure services, has been promoted to the position of Homewood-Flossmoor park district director. Joining the district in 1974 as superintendent of recreation, Meyer holds an undergraduate degree in physical education and an MS degree in parks and recreation administration from Southern Illinois University. He also is a graduate of the executive development program of Indiana University and the revenue sources management school of North Carolina State University. Before joining the H-F district, the new director was assistant superintendent of recreation for the Naperville park district and director of the Southern Illinois Special Olympics. His professional memberships include the National Recreation and Parks association and the Illinois Park and Recreation association. He served as secretary, director of the recreation section and chairman of the public information committee for IPRA. He has been nominated to serve as regional representative for NRPA and is past president of the South Suburban Special Recreation association. Illinois Parks and Recreation 26 November/December 1981 The South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation, located in Downers Grove, announced the hiring of Catherine Shekleton as a Recreation Leader. Cathy is a 1981 graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Park Administration, emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation. Cathy completed her internship during the summer at SEASPAR.
Thompson A. Dyke announced the formation of his new firm, Thompson Dyke & Associates, Ltd. located in Northbrook. The new firm is a professional consulting firm practicing in the design fields of urban planning and landscape architecture. It will be specializing in the preparation of comprehensive plans for cities and villages; central business district redevelopment and revitalization plans; master park and open space plans; community development programs; tax increment financing studies; land utilization and feasibility studies, annexation, condemnation, zoning; land development planning and expert testimony. Theodore R. Johnson, urban planner, has joined the firm as a Vice President. Thompson Dyke has over 25 years of experience in the fields of planning and landscape architecture and is a member of both the American Institute of Certified Planners and the American Society of Landscape Architects. He is currently International Treasurer of Lambda Alpha, an Honorary Land Economics Fraternity, and is a director of the Open Lands Project as well as the Corporation for Open Lands in Chicago.
