Meet Your Staffs At IAPD ... And At IPRA Here they are! The members of the staffs of the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. Any time you have a problem or an inquiry about parks and recreation, don't hesitate to contact the appropriate office or individual. And watch for them at the Annual Conference. They will be there to help run the show. If you are not sure which person to contact at each of the offices, call Louise Herndon at the IAPD or Christine Orzech at IPRA. The "hot line" numbers are: IAPD, 217-523-4554 and IPRA, 312-991-2820. Harris Fawell (not pictured) has been the General Counsel for the IAPD since 1979. He received his Juris Doctor Degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1952. A former state senator for fourteen years, Fawell is highly respected in legal and legislative circles and has received numerous awards and citations for his distinguished legislative leadership in behalf of parks and recreation.
Peter Murphy, Director of Governmental Services for the IAPD, is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he received a B.A. degree in political science and psychology and New England School of Law, Boston, Mass., where he received a J.D. degree. In his capacity as legal and legislative counsel of the Association, he works closely with the legislature on issues of concern to park, forest preserve and conservation districts. He formerly was employed by the Illinois Legislative Reference Bureau in Springfield which is a bill drafting arm of the General Assembly. He is a member of the Illinois and American Bar Associations.
Dr. Ted Flickinger, Executive Director of the IAPD, has 20 years of experience in administrative and education positions in the park and recreation profession. He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University (B.S. in recreation and outdoor education, and an M.S. in parks and recreation administration) and Ohio State University (Ph.D. in natural resources management). While Director of Parks and Recreation at Bexley, Ohio, he won the national Gold Medal Grand Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management. He was a professor at Ohio State University and Regional Director of NRPA and recipient of numerous professional awards. He has been IAPD Executive Director since March, 1980.
Gayle Momeny is Coordinator of Membership Services at IAPD. She began work at IAPD in April 1982. Ms. Momeny has an extensive background in association management with emphasis on public affairs and lobbying. She formerly was a member of the staff for the Speaker of the House in the Illinois General Assembly. Her educational background includes a B.A. degree from the U. of I. Circle Campus, Chicago, and M.A. in Public Affairs from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb.
Bill Bodine is business manager for the IAPD. He joined the staff in 1972 after having served as an accounts clerk for the management information division of the Illinois Department of Finance in Springfield. He has an Associate degree in applied science and business administration from Danville Junior College, and has studied psychology and sociology at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.

Kay Forest has been Executive Director of the 1,600 member Illinois Park and Recreation Association since 1973. A 1970 graduate of Western Illinois University, she has a B.S. degree in recreation and park administration and is currently working on an M.B.A. from Keller Graduate School of Management. Under her direction, membership in the IPRA has doubled and the operating budget has grown from $30,000 to $200,000. She was editor of Illinois Parks and Recreation magazine from 1973 to 1978. Several awards, including Western Illinois University's 1976 Alumni Achievement Award, were presented to her.
Lydia Lombardo is in charge of publications, public relations and membership services for Illinois Park and Recreation Association. She received a Bachelor's Degree in English/Communications with a public relations specialty from Mundelein College, Chicago. Before joining IPRA in 1981, she had worked as public relations director for Glenview Park District. Her work includes publicity for the IPRA-IAPD Conference in November. Theresa (Terri) Valente (not pictured) is a part-time secretary with the IPRA. She is a student at Harper College majoring in elementary education and because of her work with IPRA, she has now decided to minor in communications.
Christine Orzech is the IPRA's "official greeter" as receptionist. She also is office manager, bookkeeper and secretary to Kay Forest. An employe of IPRA since 1977, she has a professional office background, including secretarial and bookkeeping duties. A native Chicagoan, she has lived in Mount Prospect since 1976.
Louise Herndon is secretary to IAPD Executive Director Ted Flickinger. She also does secretarial work for the Director of Governmental Services and the Editor of IPR magazine. She has attended school at Southern Illinois University and Sangamon State University where she is completing a degree in work, culture and society.
Becky Bradway, currently a part-time secretary with the IAPD, is a recent graduate of Sangamon State University in Springfield with a B.A. and M.A. in literature. She has worked as a staff member at Illinois Issues magazine, and as graduate assistant for the literature program at Sangamon State. She is author of several published short stories and is working on a novel.
New Editor For IPR Magazine
Virgil E. Tipton, Jr., Springfield, editor of the Illinois Bar Journal for the past 22 years, has been appointed editor of Illinois Parks and Recreation magazine beginning with this issue. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Tipton has served as Director of Publications for the Illinois State Bar Association since 1960. In addition to the Illinois Bar Journal, he has supervised and edited numerous other publications for the ISBA. He also has been the Association's official photographer. Prior to 1960 he was employed as chief editorial writer for the State (cont. on p.48) Illinois Parks and Recreation 19 September/October 1982 (cont. from p.19) Journal daily newspaper in Springfield. A veteran of World War II, he was assigned to the 98th Bomber Group at McCook Field. McCook, Nebraska at the time the war ended. Tipton is married to the former Alice Layton and they are parents of four children, Ann, a senior at Bradley University; Virgil III, a sophomore at Northwestern University; James, a senior and Thomas, a sophomore at Griffin High School in Springfield. Tipton's favorite recreational activities are photography, reading, brisk walks in Springfield's Washington Park, and gardening. Illinois Parks and Recreation 48 September/October 1982 |
