LIFE. BE IN IT. Do Your Part — Plan Now — To Make June 4 The Greatest Day In Park And Recreation History Massive plans are under way in Illinois and the nation to kick off the LIFE. BE IN IT. campaign on June 4 to make Americans more aware of the benefits of regular physical and recreational activities. "Don't stagnate — put something into life and in turn get more out of it" is the LIFE. BE IN IT. philosophy. More than 115 Illinois park and recreation organizations have pledged to sponsor programs on June 4 to call attention to LIFE. BE IN IT. Thousands more nationwide will join the observance.
Both Morgan Powell, President of the Illinois Association of Park Districts, and David Phillips, President of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, urge all park and leisure professionals to support LIFE. BE IN IT. "As a result of increased heart disease, mental illness and family breakdown, Americans need good leisure activities now more than ever," Powell said. "That's what LIFE. BE IN IT. is saying. Do whatever makes you happy — but do something. Take a walk in the park, visit a zoo, go to a theme park, take up skiing, jog, punch some clay, create colors on a canvas; but do something. We're committed to showing people that there is much more to life than television and work." Phillips stated: "We hope that this LIFE. BE IN IT. campaign will spur people to take advantage of all the wonderful things there are to do in Illinois. Many events are available through programs provided by Illinois park and recreation agencies. A great many are free. But we're not just pushing programs and park areas that we administer, we want people to get up and recreate ... at their local bowling alley, on a forest preserve trail walk, or at the art institute." One of the key elements of LIFE. BE IN IT. is family unity as depicted in its logo of a family group pursuing recreation. Some examples of activities scheduled at Illinois park and recreation agencies on LIFE. BE IN IT. day, June 4 are as follows: Palatine Park District — Balloon launch, bike-a-thon, track and field meet for kids 9 to 14. Highland Park District — Six-legged race (runners with dog), diaper derby, volleyball, band, refreshments. Glen Ellyn Park District — Women's softball tourney; photo show and contest; open house dance extravaganza. Some park districts will observe LIFE. BE IN IT. on Sunday, June 5: Peoria Park District — 8th Old Fashioned Sunday, family activities; old time music, cart rides, antique cars and crafts exhibits; old-fashioned draft root beer. Park Ridge Park District— Family splash and activities. Alsip Park District — Sand sculpture contest. In addition to these park districts, the Carbondale Park District calls attention to LIFE. BE IN IT. through extensive use of LBII animated characters in its attractive and lively Spring activity booklet.
Illinois residents will be treated to the sight of skies dotted with hundreds of colorful balloons when park districts throughout the state sponsor childrens' balloon launches at 12:00 Noon, June 4, to kick-off LIFE. BE IN IT. Day. Since Illinois Parks & Recreation Magazine last published a list of park districts and other groups participating in LIFE. BE IN IT., several others have signed up.
