Junior high school students, the St. Charles Park District and a local supermarket are working together to help senior citizens obtain groceries.

The "Groceries Obtained for Elderly Residents" (GOFER) program was initiated by the park district last November for senior citizens who need someone to shop for them. Seniors contact the student volunteers whenever they need groceries. The participating store has created special discounts so the students do not have to handle any money.

In addition to helping the elderly, GOFER also helps to develop the students' sense of responsibility. The program functions under Roundabout, the park district's service organization of students from the three local junior high schools.

The Champaign Park District has developed a publication to help park and recreation agencies gain local support for their programs and services through public involvement.

This book, Developing Community Support for Parks and Recreation, explores ways in which local recreation agencies can assume many of the functions formerly provided by the federal and State governments. It lists various ideas for improving agency management and creating greater public awareness. Special emphasis is given to the value of public involvement.
