Our final issue of the year focuses on therapeutic recreation, a growing and important area of the leisure field in Illinois. Our State is recognized nationally for our outstanding special recreation associations. We are featuring six articles prepared by professionals in therapeutic recreation. They provide an overview of the varied programs and services made available by our therapeutic recreation agencies, and the ongoing efforts to improve the delivery of recreation to special populations. Other articles address volunteer recognition, contracting with the private sector and the impact of recreation on the State's economy. We thank the many authors who submitted material for publication in the magazine during the past year, and we hope that everyone will continue to share their talents and expertise with our readers during 1987. Our literary awards will be presented at the annual awards luncheon during the Illinois Park and Recreation Conference in Peoria. The winners and their articles are: Vance Barrie, Rockford Park District, "Are your programs a well-kept secret?"; Frank Duis, Sterling Park District, "How to maximize your fiscal options"; Richard Grodsky, Dundee Township Park District, "Teaming for success"; Thomas Kalousek, Rockford Park District, "Park district tests new management tool"; Steve Montez, Peoria Park District, "Park district responds to inner city needs"; Todd Pratt, Normal Parks and Recreation Department, "Does your agency train its coaches?," and Illinois Lt. Gov. George H. Ryan, "Reclamation Council maximizes potential of abandoned mines." Congratulations! On behalf of the Joint Publications Committee of the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, I wish you the happiest of holiday seasons.
