People, Places and Things THOMPSON DYKE & ASSOCIATES, LTD. of Northbrook is pleased to announce the addition of Peter Libbey to their land planning, park design and landscape architecture staff. Libbey is an Evanston resident and a recent graduate of the University of Illinois in Champaign with a degree in both landscape architecture and ornamental horticulture. He has experience in planting design, plant maintenance, site planning and the preparation of construction documents. The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) announces the addition of two new staff members. ANNE CARROLL, a 1984 graduate of Southern Illinois University's therapeutic recreation program, is a program specialist. Prior to assuming her current position, she worked for the Jackson Community Workshop in Murphysboro. JIM GIBUN is also a program specialist. He graduated in 1986 from Western Illinois University's recreation and park administration program. Giblin is past director of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association's (IPRA's) Student Section. He also received the Stephen Keay scholarship from the Illinois Therapeutic Recreation Section of IPRA and the South Suburban Park and Recreation Professional Association's (SSPRPA's) scholarship. NANCY B. SARTORI, T.R.S., is a recreational therapist at the Paulson Center for Rehabilitation Medicine in Willowbrook. She is the primary recreational therapist for the Day Life Program which services the disabled and the elderly. Medical monitoring and a variety of therapeutic recreation services are provided. These include physical, occupational and speech therapies. Ms. Sartori is also available to assist other departments in the Center. Obituaries ROBERT RUHE, business manager at the Deerfield Park District, died recently. He was 63.
Ruhe had been employed with Deerfield since 1983. He previously served as general superintendent of the Minneapolis (MN) Park and Recreation Board, and was often described as the father of the modern Minneapolis park system. Ruhe was also director of parks and recreation for the Skokie (IL) Park District. Ruhe was a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Minnesota, Indiana and Illinois. He was a founding trustee of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and a member and officer of the American Institute of Park Executives (AIPE). He was also a member of the American Park and Recreation Society (APRS), Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) and the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD). In 1965, Ruhe received AIPE's Distinguished Service Award and IPRA's Distinguished Fellow Award. Books Choosing a Microcomputer for Parks and Recreation Administration By Robert W. Douglass, Ph.D., and Irmgard Schubert This manual emphasizes the decision-making process necessary before a microcomputer can be purchased, and guides the decision maker systematically through the process of selecting the microcomputer system most appropriate for an agency's needs and for the least money. The manual also contains a series of worksheets that "walk" the user through the step-by-step decision process. This includes assessing and prioritizing agency needs, software requirements and the computer hardware appropriate to those needs. Space is also available for brainstorming and ideas. Douglass is assistant director. School of Natural Resources, at Ohio State University, and served as division chairman of the Parks and Recreation Administration. Ms. Schubert is a research associate in the School of Natural Resources at Ohio State University. She also serves as an advisory board member of a community recreation department and as a consultant for recreation planning. The 50-page book is listed for $7.95 (college) and $8.95 (trade). DONNA SOLTANEK has been hired as program supervisor for the Villa Park Recreation Department. A graduate of Southern Illinois University, she spent two years as recreation supervisor with the Hazel Crest Park District before accepting her present position. Adult, head injured persons can receive social support through the Survivors. The group was formed in March, 1984, to provide these persons with opportunities for social, recreational and educational activities. It also offers support and encouragement through interaction and sharing. The Survivors usually meet monthly on the fourth Tuesday evening at the Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Neihoff Pavilion, 955 Beisner, Elk Grove Village, IL. The STERLING PARK DISTRICT has received a check for $12,750 from the Sterling-Rock Falls Independent Insurance Agents for a complete fire alarm system at its 81,380 square foot Westwood Sports Center. The check presentation was made in September at the Expo '86 Trade Show which was sponsored by the Sterling Chamber of Commerce and the park district. Since 1980, the Independent Insurance Agents Association has provided more than $28,000 in fire protection funds for various district facilities. The district has seen a marked reduction in its insurance costs since the fire alarm-systems have been installed. The park district has experienced two costly fires: the Dillon Home Museum (1982) and the Westwood Indoor Track (1984). Representatives of the Independent Insurance Agents Association installed the new alarm system in the Westwood Sports Center prior to the fall trade show. That show was attended by more than 10,000 persons.

PAT O'DEA-EVANS was recently appointed to the board of directors of the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Ms. O'Dea-Evans has worked in clinical therapeutic recreation settings since 1975. She attended Triton College's therapeutic recreation program and graduated from Norwalk College, CT, in 1981 with a degree in therapeutic recreation and leisure studies. She holds her certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Assistant (CTRA) and will co-represent that group for the NCTRC. Ms. O'Dea-Evans was the first recreational therapist in Illinois to obtain certification as an addictions counselor. Her professional affiliations include membership in the National Therapeutic Recreation Society where she heads the Substance Abuse Standards Task Force on the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals' Standards, in addition, she represents the American Therapeutic Recreation Association's Substance Abuse Standards Task Force. Ms. O'Dea-Evans is also chairman of the Illinois Therapeutic Recreation Section's Standards Committee and a member of the Therapeutic Recreation Association of Clinical Settings (TRACS). She is a recreational coordinator at Addiction Recovery of Chicago in Hoffman Estates. The Burbank Park District announces the hiring of PATTY MURRAY as recreation supervisor. Her duties include general programming for adults and youths, adult athletic leagues, special events, trips and publicity. Ms. Murray graduated with a bachelor's degree in recreation and leisure studies from Eastern Illinois University in 1984. Her previous full-time experience was with the Bridgeview Park District. Her professional memberships include the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) and the South Suburban Park and Recreation Professional Association (SSPRPA), of which she is secretary.
