economic development conferences held this spring by the National League of Cities.

The banking industry has changed dramatically over the last few years and will continue to do so as a result of deregulation, telecommunications, foreign investment and pending legislation.

NLC's regional conferences will use case studies, panel discussions and exercises to help local officials and others understand the turbulent financial environment, its impact on cities and ways that cities can draw on financial institutions to further local goals and interests.

The conferences will be held in Albuquerque, NM, April 28-29; Charlotte, NC, May 16-17; San Diego, CA; May 26-27; and Chicago, IL, June 9-10. The second day of each conference will include a tour of host city sites related to banking and development.

Conference speakers will be drawn from cities, financial institutions, community groups, federal agencies and universities. Highlights will include the following:

• Understanding recent changes and future trends in banking

• Exploring the impact of financial institutions on local development

• Taking stock of local financial resources

• Developing strategies to influence investment

• Examining successful city and banking partnerships.

Registration fees for the conferences are $130 for officials of NLC direct member cities, $150 for officials from non-member cities and $175 for all others. Fees for those registering a month in advance are $110, $128 and $150 respectively.

To register, write to: Economic Development Regionals, the National League of Cities, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20004.

For further information, contact: Virginia Mayer or Matt Kane at 202/626-3170. •
