People, Places and Things Cyndy McKone was named supervisor of the Marketing and Public Relations Division for the Peoria Park District effective February 29. In that capacity, she is responsible for planning, developing and implementing marketing plans, special promotional endeavors and informational services for the district.
Ms. McKone has a BS degree in journalism and communications, with a major in advertising, from the University of Illinois. Her previous positions have been both as a copywriter and a copy director. Ms. McKone was an account executive with WEEK television and Burdon Advertising in Peoria. In addition, she established her own freelance advertising/marketing business, and later worked as an account executive with C.F.&L. Advertising, Washington, IL. The Governor's Office of Voluntary Action's (GOVA's) HELP IV Conference will be held May 24-25 at the Bismarck Hotel in Chicago. Chicago Turf & Irrigation recently broke ground for a new 34,000-square-foot facility in Itasca. Construction is expected to be completed this fall. The company serves the entire northern Illinois area and a part of Indiana. It distributes commercial mowing equipment and turf irrigation products, TORO being its primary supplier. It also represents approximately 40 other allied brands.

Ms. Bruns worked for park and recreation departments in Miami, FL, Champaign and Peoria. She served as superintendent of recreation for the Oakbrook Terrace Park District. Ms. Bruns received her AAS degree in recreation from Parkland College, Champaign. She received her BA degree from Western Illinois University in a unique, independent study program emphasizing outdoor education and parks and recreation. Illinois Parks and Recreation 22 May/June 1988 People, Places & Things Dave Teachout became superintendent of parks at the Joliet Park District effective January 11.
Teachout is a graduate of Michigan State University, receiving his BS degree with honors in park administration. He was previously property manager at Bradford Woods, a 2,300-acre outdoor education center operated by Indiana University - Bloomington. Chris Wilsman has joined the staff of the Deerfield Park District as athletic supervisor. Wilsman has a BA in physical education from Trinity College in Deerfield, IL, and an MS in recreation and park administration from Western Illinois University. He has served as program and fitness director at the College Park Athletic Club, and as physical director of the East Community YMCA. He is a certified fitness specialist and a specialist in corporate recreation. Wilsman brings a wide range of athletic accomplishments with him to his new position, having played basketball and tennis on his college teams. The Wheaton Park District recently received the Daniel Flaherty National Gold Medal Award for the design and construction of the new Vern Kiebler Learning Center at the Cosley Animal Farm and Museum. Kenneth Kutska, superintendent of parks and planning, made the winning presentation. Michael T. Williams, president of the Cosley Foundation, accepted the Gold Medal Award from Jesse Madison, executive vice-president of the Chicago Park District. Also present at the ceremony was Wheaton Park District Dir. Robert Dunsmuir. Williams and his architect firm, Williams/Pollock/Associates, Ltd. of Wheaton, donated the designs for the new Learning Center, which is a barn that houses a milking parlor, a veterinarian's medical room, a quarantine room, numerous stalls for the farm's animals, and a library learning center in the barn's loft. Together with an aviary, deer run, hog pen, chicken coop and peacock house, the new Learning Center is a vital addition to the Cosley Farm. The Daniel Flaherty Award is given annually by the Chicago Park District, in cooperation with the Great Lakes Training Institute. The Award is given on the basis of community cooperation, use of federal aid, uniqueness, quality, and presentation. The Vem Kiebler Learning Center was completed and open to the public in November 1987. The Cosley Animal Farm and Museum has been open since 1974, and is now open every day of the year, at 1356 Gary Ave., Wheaton.
Illinois Parks and Recreation 26 May/June 1988 Chicago Turf & Irrigation, Itasca, recently received two awards for excellence in sales growth, marketing promotion and service support. Olathe Manufacturing, Inc., Olathe, KS, honored the company with an Outstanding Distributor Performance Award for 1987. The second recognition was as the 1987 Otterbine Distributor of the Year from Barebo, Inc. of Emmaus, PA. Chicago Turf & Irrigation, owned by Ron and Mary Jones, provides commercial equipment and irrigation products for northern Illinois and one county in Indiana. Joe Schultz has resigned as director of parks and recreation at the Deerfield Park District to accept the position as community services manager for the City of Rancho Cucamonga, CA. He will be responsible for managing the recreation, park planning and community relations/special projects staff. The department has 18 full-time staff, 35 part-time staff and numerous contractual instructors. A full range of recreation and sports activities are being developed for two multi-faceted 40-acre community parks dedicated in July 1987. A 99-acre central park of mostly passive land use with a gymnasium, an Olympic-style aquatics park, community centers and a library is in the request for proposal process. When completed, the park and recreation system will total 23 facilities and more than 334 acres of land. During Schultz's service in Deerfield, the park district won the Gold Medal Award (1985).
Illinois Parks and Recreation 28 May/June 1988 The Dundee Township Park District announces the appointment of two new staff members. Regina Densmore, assistant athletic supervisor, is involved with program development and the on-site supervision of various athletic activities. She has a master's degree in health leisure and sports from the University of Houston.
Paula Schwartz, Senior Center director, is responsible for the daily operation of, and long-term programs at, the district's multi-use Senior Citizens Center. She received her bachelor's degree in special recreation from Illinois State University.
Deb McCririe was promoted to the position of Youth Services Coordinator

Ms. McCririe has a BS in therapeutic recreation from Michigan State University, and has two years experience in the therapeutic recreation field with the NEDSRA. Jayne McGuire has joined the NEDSRA staff as Youth Services Coordinator I. She received a BS degree in therapeutic recreation from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She joins the NEDSRA with more than two years of youth service programming experience. Karen Lesniak has assumed the position of support service coordinator. She is a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and has five years of experience in the field of therapeutic recreation and with the NEDSRA. Rick Kucera joined the NEDSRA staff as a recreational specialist. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University, and has three years of experience in the field of therapeutic recreation. The Chicago Park District has announced the hiring of three new diectors. Richard Grodsky is the director of host parks, and will be responsible for the implementation and management of the district's 13 new host park clusters. Grodsky was most recently superintendent at the Dundee Township Park District, Carpentersville. His management experience has included comprehensive recreation program initiatives, facilities, marketing, and personnel and resource development. He has a degree in recreation and park administration from the University of Illinois, and he is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional. Grodsky is secretary of the board of directors of the Illinois Park and Receation Association (IPRA), and is immediate past president of the University of Illinois Applied Life Studies Alumni Association Board. James C. Albritton is the director of regional parks and will be responsible for the regional park clusters. The clusters will initiate special events with area and citywide focus. Albritton began his career with the Chicago Park District in 1967 as a physical instructor and progressed into park management in 1971, where he has been for the last 13 years. Most recently, he held the position of acting regional manager at Washington Park, the pilot program for the regional park clusters. Albritton has a BA in recreation/physical education from Chicago State University, and a master's degree in urban policy and planning in public service administration from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He is a certified member of IPRA, and he has authored several publications. Carol McCreary is the director of Illinois Parks and Recreation 3O May/June 1988 program support, planning and development. In that capacity, she will be responsible for in-service staff training, program innovations and the coordination of support services. A graduate with honors from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Dr. McCreary was assistant professor and undergraduate studies director for the Department of Leisure Studies. During her tenure, she was responsible for various teaching assignments, including personnel management, and supervision theory and practice. She is an established author, lecturer and consultant on trends and changes in recreation and parks administration education. She is the past affirmative action officer for IPRA. Edward Harvey is superintendent of parks and properties for the Northbrook Park District. For the past 10 years he was the director of parks and also assistant to the general superintendent at the Champaign Park District. A graduate of the University of Illinois, Harvey holds an MS degree and has been involved in the park and recreation field for 16 years. He graduated from the Great Lakes Park Management School, and has been an instructor and participant in other park management schools. Harvey taught parks maintenance at the University of Illinois and Eastern Illinois University. He is also a member of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA). Books Conservation Easements and Their Use by Governmental Agencies
