Mayor Jeffrey T. Markland has been an elected official since 1973 and is currently serving in his fourth term as Mayor. In addition to his duties as Mayor and Liquor Commissioner, he is presently serving as Chairman of: the Champaign-Urbana Urbanized Area Transportation Committee; the Regional Planning Commission; the Board of Local Improvements; the METCAD Policy Board; the 9-1-1 Policy Board; and the Business District Development and Redevelopment Commission. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Urbana-Champaign Economic Development Corporation and the C-U Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is Past President of the Central Illinois Mayors Association and Past President of the Illinois Municipal League. He has served on the Finance and Intergovernmental Relations Committee and is currently serving on the Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Steering Committee of the National League of Cities. Mayor Markland is a life-long resident of Urbana-Champaign and, along with his father, Tom, owned and operated Markland's Painting Company. He was first elected to the City Council in 1973, and in addition to his present duties has served on over thirty different boards and commissions. He and his wife, Barbara, are active in the real estate business, associated with Cogdal and Hobbs.
