Illinois jobless rate dips As the recession deepened in December, the nation's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent, up from 5.9 percent in November. In Illinois things looked a little better. The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.9 percent, down from 6.0 percent. This was the first time since October 1979 that Illinois had a lower jobless rate than the nation. With 6,068 million people, December's Illinois civilian work force was the second largest on record. There were 5,708 million people with jobs and 360,000 people looking for work. During 10 of the 12 months in calender year 1990, the number of unemployed person stayed under 400,000. Holiday retail trade and construction boosted December's employment levels. Over the year, nonfarm employment increased by 1.0 percent to 5,271 million jobs, a record for the month. Trade, services and government made over-the-year gains. Construction and manufacturing declined. Final unemployment rates in October for the state's metro areas were:
