40 YEARS OF PUBLIC SERVICE
Mayor Von Dee Cruse, of Granite City. Married to
Lois Hamm Cruse and have two children and five
grandchildren. Attended local schools through high
school, attended Washington University and Southern
Illinois University. Served in the United States Army
with the Ninety-First Infantry Division from March 17,
1943 to November 8, 1945 in World War II, decorated
with the Bronze Star for heroic action. Was stationed in
Italy for sixteen months. Working career consists of
General Steel Casting as a pattern maker; the United
States Post Office as a mail carrier; Granite City Steel;
elected as Assessor from 1957 to 1965; ran for Mayor,
was defeated; Madison County Circuit Clerk's Office
as an Administrative Assistant for three years; owner of
Jacobmeyer's Tavern; was appointed as Assessor in
1972; ran for Mayor and was elected in 1985 and reelected in 1989. He was elected to the City Council as
City Alderman for two terms from May 7,1951 to May
of 1957.
