THE VILLAGE OF SCHAUMBURG EXPANDS
COMMITMENT TO TRANSPORTATION ISSUES
The Village of Schaumburg is enhancing its ability
to plan for the community's future growth by broadening the role of its transportation planner.
Tom Dabareiner, the Village of Schaumburg's
transportation planner since 1986, has been given the
responsibilities of assistant director of the Village's
planning department.
"Schaumburg's transportation issues will continue
to be aggressively addressed by Tom," said Director of
Planning Thomas C. Koenig. "By expanding Tom's role
we are telling the community that meeting the challenges of future growth, through planning, is a task
which we take very seriously."
As transportation planner, Dabareiner recently
completed the Village of Schaumburg's application for
personal rapid transit (PRT). He also oversees the
Schaumburg Municipal Helistop, Illinois' "1990 Heliport of the Year" and the award-winning Woodfield
Shopper's Shuttle.
In a related move, the Village of Schaumburg hired
Leanne Redden to assist Dabareiner with Schaumburg's transportation projects. Redden is a University
of Illinois graduate with a master's degree in planning.
When Redden starts in June, the Village of Schaumburg
will be the only Chicago suburb with two full-time
transportation planners on staff.
According to Dabareiner, "Leanne will add new
strength to our transportation team as we continue to
offer creative and realistic ways of solving transportation issues in the growing Schaumburg area. Her addition will help the Village in its attempts to secure the
proposed PRT project."
The Village of Schaumburg is one of six suburbs
competing to be selected as host site for the demonstration PRT. The Regional Transportation Authority has
completed site visits of the proposed routes and is expected to narrow the list of applicants in July. The
winner will be announced in about one year.
The PRT system would employ individual cars that
seat up to five people and move along one-way guide-
ways directly to the destination specified by the cars'
passengers. The waiting time for the PRT cars will be
no more than three minutes and the system will be
constantly monitored to ensure safety.
