The City of Naperville is introducing a new landscape materials reduction program with the unveiling of a character called Mr. Lion'. Mr. Lion', as in "lying on the lawn," will serve as a symbol for leaving yard clippings on the ground. Legislation now bans landscape materials from landfills. Thus, Mr. Lion' will promote alternative uses for landscape materials — such as a moisture retardant, a nutrient replenisher, and as mulch for landscaping. Mr. Lion' will also educate children on the benefits of recycling, make public appearances, and provide residents with status reports on the program. He promises to be a visible and productive member of the community. The drought this summer has reduced the demand for clippings. As a result, a new trend has emerged — leaving landscape materials on the ground versus bagging. Mr. Lion' will remind and help residents continue in this direction. The City is receiving a grant from Will County for the program.
