1993 ALL-AMERICA CITY AWARD FINALISTS SELECTED

Thirty communities from around the United States have been selected as finalists in the 44th annual All-America City Award competition, the nation's oldest community recognition award.

The thirty All-America City Award finalists are:

Kansas: Lindsborg, Wichita
Kentucky: Owensboro-Daviess County
Maryland: Bowie and Prince George's County
Missouri: Jackson County
Nebraska: Dawson County and Grand Island
North Carolina: Mocksville-Davie County, Southport, Washington, and Winston-Salem
Ohio: Cleveland
Pennsylvania: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh
Rhode Island: East Providence
Tennessee: Pulaski
Texas: Fort Worth, Laredo, and Piano
Washington: Yakima
Wisconsin: Black River Falls Area

Illustrating "what's right with America", the award honors communities that take effective action to solve issues and problems through the cooperation of businesses, citizens, nonprofits, and government. Applicants are judged based on a ten-component measure of community strength called the CIVIC INDEX, a National Civic League vehicle to help communities evaluate and improve their civic infrastructure. A 19-member screening committee met for two days of deliberations during which 151 applications for the award were reviewed.

Christopher T. Gates, National Civic League Vice President, stated "This is a record year for applications. It affirms that there are communities out there collaboratively seeking innovative solutions to community problems. All finalists displayed impressive projects, from redeveloping historic buildings to substance abuse programs. They left the committee with some very difficult decisions."

Each of the 30 Finalists will make formal presentations to the All-America City Award Jury in Tampa, Florida May 20-22, 1993. After a Civic Action Fair on May 21 and two days of presentations, ten All-America City Award winners will be announced the evening of May 22 at the Hyatt Regency Westshore.

Since the program's inception in 1949, more than 4,000 United States communities have competed for the award, and over 380 communities have received the prestigious All-America City Designation. The All-America City Award is a program of the National Civic League and is sponsored by The Allstate Foundation. For the fifth year, The Allstate Foundation has under-written the All-America City Award program. The Foundation, founded by Allstate Insurance Company in 1952, provides financial support for health and human services, safety and neighborhood revitalization.

The National Civic League was founded in 1894 by Theodore Roosevelt and other civic reformers of that era for the purpose of promoting active citizen involvement in the governance of their communities. Based in Denver, Colorado, the National Civic League will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 1994. •
