Election Names
Primary races set; December 13 was the final filing date for a candidate to be listed on the ballot for the March 15 primaries. Most of the names are familiar, but a few new names showed up on the Democratic ticket — already more crowded than the Republicans — with a LaRouche slate of candidates. The Democrats are not likely to get caught off guard as they did in 1986 when two candidates backing the philosophy of political extremist Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. won statewide offices in the primary and forced Democratic candidate Adlai E. Stevenson III to denounce them and form his own party. Lest anyone forgot, the Republicans won the election for governor in November. On the Republican ticket, Gov. Jim Edgar will be challenged by Kane County businessman Jack Roeser, who turned in 8,500 signatures on his filing petitions (he needed 5,000). Lt. Gov. Bob Kustra is the only candidate for his office. DuPage County State's Atty. Jeff Ladd of Woodstock will face METRA board chairman Jim Ryan of Bensenville for the attorney general's place on the November ballot. Incumbent George H. Ryan is unopposed for the Republican nomination for secretary of state, as are Edgar's former director of employment security Loleta A. Didrickson for comptroller and state Sen. Judy Baar Topinka (22, Riverside) for treasurer. |

For the Democrats, the list for governor includes Comptroller Dawn dark Netsch, Atty. Gen. Roland W. Burris, Cook County board chairman Richard Phelan, Cook County attorney James Gierach and LaRouche candidate Sheila A. Jones of Chicago. For lieutenant governor, state Sen. Penny Severns (51-Decatur) and Sheila Smith of Palatine will share the ballot with LaRouche candidate Anthony P. Harper of Chicago. Albert F. Hofeld, who lost the U.S. Senate nomination to Carol Moseley Braun in the 1992 primary, and former Chicago Alderman Martin J. Oberman are the two candidates in the Democratic primary for attorney general. In the race for secretary of state, LaRouche candidate Rose-Marie Love of Chicago will meet state Sen. Denny J. Jacobs (36, East Moline) and Treasurer Pat Quinn, who announced for secretary of state rather than for reelection or governor. Kane County Coroner Mary Lou Kearns, who had announced for secretary of state, filed for comptroller; she will face Sen. Earlean Collins (4, Chicago), LaRouche candidate Mark P. Bender of Chicago and former LaGrange Township assessor Edward J. Schumann. The only Democrat to file against Nancy Drew Sheehan for treasurer was LaRouche candidate Thomas J. Beaudette of Chicago. |
