Grants Help Local Governments
Remove Architectural Barriers
For People With Disabilities
Gov. Jim Edgar recently announced grants totaling
$2 million to assist 51 Illinois communities in undertaking projects designed to bring them into compliance
with requirements under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
"Many community leaders embrace the principles
behind the Americans With Disabilities Act but lack the
funds necessary to bring public buildings into compliance with the Act's requirements," Edgar said.
"These grants will help ensure that communities
throughout our state can undertake projects that will
make public services accessible to all Illinois citizens."
Many communities will use the grants to renovate
restrooms, install TDD telecommunications systems,
install lifts or elevators, lower counters, install ramps
and provide signage to make public buildings accessible to people with disabilities.
Jan M. Grayson, Director of the Department of
Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA), said the
grants were funded through the federal Community
Development Assistance Program (CDAP). DCCA
staff evaluated applications based on a community's
justification of project need, financial need and eligibility of the activities outlines in the project implementation plans.
CDAP grants are funded with federal block grant
funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD). Administered in Illinois by
DCCA, the grants are awarded to units of local government with populations of 50,000 or less that are not
located within one of the six large urban counties that
receive funds directly from HUD. The maximum grant
available under this component is $150,000.
