FROM THE EDITOR
Earth Day Celebrates 25 Years by Laura J. Richter The first Earth Day was celebrated in April 1970 with rallies, demonstrations, protests and teach-ins in communities throughout the country. Though this was not the beginning of the environmental movement in the United States, it did serve as a major milestone that sent a public policy message to state and national leaders to preserve and maintain a healthy environment while repairing past damages. On April 22, millions of Americans and individuals throughout the world will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Earth Day. Illinois park districts and forest preserves will offer activities to educate our citizens on the importance of acting in an environmentally sensitive fashion by recycling, conserving energy and water, using energy-efficient transportation, and adopting a more ecologically sound lifestyle. On this historic occasion, we must also commit to continued environmental activism if we are to protect and preserve our delicate global environment. This issue of Illinois Parks & Recreation celebrates Earth Day by focusing on the environmental issues of today.
