Congratulations to this year's recipients! IPRA and IAPD are very proud of the individuals who volunteered countless hours to help promote the field of parks and recreation. The IPRA and IAPD Awards and Recognition Committees have met to discuss goals for the upcoming year. The award packets will be mailed to agencies in late July. Be thinking of organizations and individuals to nominate for the awards and recognize those who are so deserving.

Greg Petry Appointed
Waukegan Executive Director

TheWaukegan Park District Board of Directors announced the appointment of Greg Petry as Executive Director. Petry served as the Superintendent of Parks for the district since 1987. His leadership experience includes: Director, Parks and Natural Resource Management Section of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association; President, Midwest Institute of Park Executives; Member, Board of Regents National Park and Recreation Association Park Maintenance and Management School; and President, National Sports Turf Managers Association.

Petry has more than 15 years full-time experience in the parks and recreation field. In addition to the Waukegan Park District, he has worked for the Park Ridge Recreation and Park District and Mundelein Recreation and Park District, and interned at the Park District of Highland Park and Division of Recreation and Parks in East Brunswick, NJ.

Tony Malcak Retires as Brookfield Director

After 52 years in the recreation field. Tony Malcak has retired. Malcak was the Director of Playgrounds and Recreation at the Village of Brookfield, where he has served since 1983. Prior to that, he worked for the Westchester Park District and Catholic Youth Organization.

Malcak is credited with introducing the special recreation program in Brookfield and pioneering the use of an omni surface for tennis courts in the area. He has received numerous honors and awards and wants to be remembered as "a person who loved the field of parks and recreation and one who tried to reach all age groups with innovative programs."

30-Year Arlington Heights Employee
Don "D.J." Johns Retires

After thirty-one years of service to the Arlington Heights Park District, Don "D.J." Johns has retired. Johns has held the positions of custodian, foreman and most currently maintenance supervisor in charge of the custodial, building and swimming pool maintenance services of the parks department.

The board of commissioners honored Johns with a resolution recognizing his outstanding contribution to the district as "a sincere, hard-working, dedicated and loyal member." He has played a major role in providing clean, quality services and an attractive, safe swimming environment for the residents of Arlington Heights.

Edward Clift Appointed Byron Forest Preserve
Executive Director

Edward C. Clift has been named Executive Director of the Byron Forest Preserve District. Clift came to Byron after serving as the Assistant Director of the Des Plaines Park District for 19 years.

Clift was chosen by the district's Board of Commissioners after an extensive search. The Board was assisted by the Illinois Association of Park District's Director Search Program.

Julia Loofbourrow has joined the Champaign Park District as the new Cultural Arts/Special Events Coordinator. Loofbourrow received her master's degree in Arts Administration from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. She has worked for the Lexington Philharmonic Performing Arts and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Loofbourrow will be in charge of arts programs, concerts in the parks, and special events.

The Village of Villa Park Park and Recreation Department announced the hiring of Marion Hummell as their new Superintendent of Parks, Buildings and Grounds. A 14-year veteran, Hummell previously worked for the Glen Ellyn Park District and Franklin Park Park District. He is responsible for maintaining the village parks, swimming pools, community centers and village buildings.

Waukegan's Michael Perkins has been appointed District Coordinator for the National Youth Sports Coaches Association in Illinois, a nonprofit organization that makes out-of-school volunteer youth coaches aware of the importance of providing for the psychological, emotional and physical needs of the children on their teams. NYSCA has more than 135,000 members across the country.

The Jeff Diver Group Environmental Law Firm has announced the placement of two associate members. Jennifer J. Sackett assists landfill owners and operators with numerous environmental legal issues, including maintaining compliance with regulations and post-closure activities. C. Dirk McElravey advises and represents clients on issues including Superfund liabilities, underground storage tanks, groundwater contamination, permitting, toxic torts, and other environmental regulatory compliance and enforcement issues.

The Illinois Association of Park Districts is pleased to announce the appointment of Kristen Butcher as Educational Services Director. Butcher will serve as the meeting planner for all of the association's educational programs. She will also assist with the coordination of IAPD's public awareness special events.

Kristen has a strong hospitality background and was most recently employed by the Springfield Hilton as Group Sales Manager. She has her B.S. in Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration from Western Illinois University.

Governor Jim Edgar has appointed Ralph Cianchetti as an Illinois delegate to the White House Conference on Aging. Cianchetti is one of 32 delegates appointed by the Governor, with 54 total representing Illinois. Cianchetti is a commissioner for the Park District of Highland Park, regional representative for AARP Vote, NRPA trustee, and a founding member of the NRPA Leisure & Aging Section.
