MOTOR FUEL TAX FUNDS
By WILLIAM T. SUNLEY, Engineer of Local Roads and Streets
|
Revenue from the sale of motor fuel during calendar
year 1995 was slightly down (.03 percent) from last
year. However, gross collections which included
$90,593,140.03 of sales tax revenue, experienced a slight
increase (2.71 percent) over last year. Sales tax revenue
was up 56.6 percent over last year because of the delay
of transfers for the four months of August, September,
October, and November of 1994. The total for these
four months was $28,272,944.00 and was deposited during CY 95. In view of these numbers, as long as fuel
consumption remains essentially constant, we can expect to see little change in motor fuel tax allotments to
local governments each year. However, when fuel consumption remains constant, the buying power of your
motor fuel tax funds is continuously eroded by the
current inflation rate.
The chart below shows Illinois motor fuel tax revenues that were distributed in calendar year 1995. Municipalities receive $22.66 per person, up from $22.16
last year. Road districts received $1,006.03 per mile, up
from $978.40 last year. Counties received their allotments on the basis of registered license fees for the
previous year.

Each month your motor fuel tax allotment varies
directly with the total monthly motor fuel tax collection
(including the sales tax) which is deposited in the State
Treasury. Should you have questions concerning your
motor fuel tax allotment or should you not receive your
monthly allotment by the end of the following month,
please call Patricia Marr in the Bureau of Local Roads
and Streets in Springfield at 217/782-1662. •
