SMALL CITIES COUNCIL MEETS IN SPRINGFIELD

The Small Cities Council of the National League
of Cities held its summer board meeting in Springfield
June 14-15. The event was co-hosted by the Illinois
Municipal League.
The council is comprised of elected officials from
across the country representing cities under 50,000
population. Paris Mayor and IML First Vice President
Frank Clinton is chairman of the Small Cities Council
and served as host of the two-day session. The council
advances issues of importance to smaller communities
and works with the National League of Cities to develop policies and legislation.
IML President Greg Sparrow welcomed the visiting municipal officials to kick off the Friday meeting.
Dennis Whetstone, Director of the Illinois Department
of Commerce and Community Affairs, presented an
overview of Illinois' economic development strategy.
Fredi Beth Schmutte, head of Schmutte and Associates
of Deerfield, discussed the Paris, Illinois economic development story.

David Schnepp of Ameritech demonstrated how
electronic commerce is benefitting municipal governments. Mike Farmer, also of Ameritech, presented how
Ameritech partnered with the State of Illinois to train
employees for a new Ameritech Cellular Customer
Service Center in Rantoul.
Christine Becker, Deputy Executive Director of
the National League of Cities, presented a computer
demonstration of "Access Local Government."
Saturday's meeting included a report from the
Small Cities Council Nominating Procedures Review
Committee, planning for workshops and other activities at the Congress of Cities in San Antonio in
December, a discussion of the council's role in the
National League of Cities and future plans.
Visiting officials, while in Springfield, toured
Lincoln's Home, the Old State Capitol, the Dana-
Thomas House, Lincoln's Tomb and New Salem.
