Don Manning, an Urbana-based photographer, went the length of Illinois for this portrait of diversity in the Prairie State. His travels for this assignment took him inside a Chicago church, on a tugboat in deep southern Illinois, and to farms and an agribusiness conglomerate in central Illinois. Manning has been a photographer for 25 years and operates his own business, Don Manning Photography, specializing in "low-intrusion" black and white images for business, health care and editorial applications. Winner of an international award for medical advertising photography, Manning is a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he studied art and design under Buckminster Fuller. The project is funded by a grant from The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It is part of a series the magazine is publishing on regionalism in Illinois. Illinois Issues May 1998 / 27
