Rack 'em Up, Again
The stuff of hunters' dreams.
BY BRENDA POTTS
Like fingerprints and snowflakes, no two antlers have the same shape. Whether you see them as trophies to be collected or promising tools in cancer research, antlers are one of nature's wonders.
Genetics, age and nutrition are contributing factors in the formation of whitetail headgear. Studies have shown that injuries may also affect the growth of antlers. In scientific terms, the growth of antlers is called antlerogenesis. These appendages of modified bone are one of the fastest-growing tissues known to man. In fact, only certain cancer cells grow faster than antlers. Let's take a closer look at the fascinating world of antlerogenesis.
Many people mistakenly think of antlers as horns, when in fact, they are two different things. Horns are permanent structures typically found in the cow family, and are not shed and grow throughout the animal's lifetime. Antlers, which are only found in the deer family, are cast off and regrown after every mating season.
It is hard to imagine that some bucks regrow more than 200 inches of antler in just a few months every year. Antlers are the stuff hunters' dreams are made of!
Generally only male deer (bucks) will grow antlers. However, there are many documented cases of female deer (does) with antler growth. In those cases, the doe's antlers usually will be deformed or much smaller in size than the buck's.
Antlers appear early in a buck's life. Small bony projections often show up on the foreheads of fawns that are just a few months old. These young deer are called button or nubbin bucks because of the tiny antlers. More commonly the buttons look like little protuberances covered with skin and hair. Each antler will be attached to a base on the skull called the pedicle.
Every spring, antlers develop from the pedicles with a specialized coating that feels similar to velvet. By September, the buck's velvet covering will begin to "die" from lack of a blood supply. It only takes a matter of hours to remove the velvet, thus exposing hardened antler underneath. Now the buck is ready to compete for a mate during the annual breeding season.
Once the mating season is complete, usually by January, bucks will begin shedding their antlers. These fallen antlers are commonly called sheds and may be eaten by rodents for their high calcium content or collected for use in a variety of artistic projects. Knife handles, chandeliers and lamp bases are just a few of these uses.
An untold number of antlers adorn mounted deer heads in the homes of hunters across Illinois. From October through mid-January, many hunters go afield in
As deer antlers grow, they are covered with a specialized layer that feels like velvet.
search of bucks with "monster racks." They share stories of trophy-caliber bucks and tell tales of "monarchs" that got away. Not all hunters are interested in the white-tail's antlers, but for those who are, an entire vocabulary exists to describe every angle, unique twist and configuration. For instance, anyone familiar with the lingo immediately recognizes a "200-class non-typical with 8-inch drop tines off both main beams, stickers on the right G2, a 22-inch inside spread, 7-inch bases and forked brow tines" as a buck with a tremendous set of antlers! A buck's total, or gross score, is a combination of circumference measurements, width of the inside spread, length of main beams and all the tines and points. Net and gross scores are recorded in typical and non-typical categories according to the method of harvest.
Several organizations have evolved to measure and record the size of a whitetail's antlers. One of the earliest antler scoring systems, which is copyrighted, was developed by the Boone and Crockett Club. The Pope and Young Club and the Illinois Big Buck Recognition Programs are patterned after the B&C system.
To qualify for the Illinois BBRP record book, deer taken by firearm must score a minimum of 140 for a typical rack and 160 for a non-typical set of antlers. The minimum for deer taken with a bow and arrow is 115 for typical and 130 for non-typical antlers. The same minimum requirements exist for deer taken with a crossbow. Crossbows are legal in Illinois for hunters with disabilities. A deer must be measured by an official scorer after the required 60-day drying period before it can be entered in the record books.
All deer listed in this article were entered in the Illinois BBRP during calendar year 2000. Some deer may have been harvested in previous years, but not entered in the program until last year. If you harvested a deer in the fall of 2000, but did not turn your score sheet in by Dec. 31, it will not be listed in this issue. More information on the BBRP and about listing your deer in the state records is available by calling (217) 782-4963.
As DNR's constituency liaison Brenda Potts oversees the Division of Constituency Services which administers the BBRP.
