Talking Turkey
Spring turkey harvest sets new record.
Hunters in Illinois set a
spring wild turkey hunting
harvest record by bagging
a preliminary total of 12,850 birds
during the recently concluded season. The statewide total compares
with the spring turkey harvest of
11,494 in 2000.
Hunters in south zone counties
and special hunt areas harvested
4,774 turkeys, an increase of 27.4
percent compared with the 2000
south zone harvest of 3,748. The
harvest in the north zone was
8,076, an increase of 4.3 percent
compared with the 2000 harvest
of 7,746.
During the four spring turkey
hunting seasons between April 9
and May 16, first season hunters
bagged the most birds with a harvest of 4,152, followed by the
fourth season with 3,033, second
season with 2,908 and third season
with 2,757.
A total of 86 counties were open
to turkey hunting this spring, including four new counties with the 2001
addition of DeWitt, Franklin, Macon
and Piatt counties.
The top five counties for spring
turkey harvest this year were
JoDaviess (731), Pike (587),
Adams (486), Calhoun (404) and
Greene (375).
DNR issued more than 35,750
paid permits and more than
16,200 landowner permits for the
2001 spring turkey season.
