View of filling stations and houses at intersection of Route 45 and 13 in Harrisburg, during the flood of 1937. Early in December a small, rectangular box with the return address "The Kennebunkport Historical Society, Kenne-bunkport, Maine" arrived at the ISHS office. Inside were ten snapshot albums, each with eight black and white photographs of the devastating winter flood of 1937, which inundated much of extreme southern Illinois. The numbered and clearly labeled photographs show the devastation in the Ohio River communities of Metropolis, Golconda, and Shawneetovvn, but also in Harrisburg, which lies thirty miles west of the Ohio near the Saline River. The photos of the flooding there, including several taken atop the Harrisburg Bank, have rarely been seen. Our thanks to the Kennebunkport Historical Society for remembering us as they cleaned out their files. The photos will be preserved in the archives of the Illinois State Historical Library. 26 I Illinois Heritage |
