FROM THE EDITOR

Ok. So maybe I don't know my LAN from my WAN. In fact, I can't say I even heard of those terms before I read Thomas Ellison's article about technology initiatives for park districts on page 52. Frankly, the magic behind computer and network operations has been one of those mysteries I've resolved to live with. The problem is, I don't want to go back to the days when an editor would melt wax and literally paste stories onto a template. (Yes, I've really done this. And yes, I am less than a hundred years old.)

So — just as it's vital to know a little bit about cars and plumbing and all those other things that make us wise consumers — even we Luddites need to learn enough about our technology options to ask intelligent questions and make reasonable decisions. That's why I hope you'll find this issue's focus stories on technology as fun and informative as I do.

And for those of us who enjoy the relatively low-tech pleasures of pedal power, Craig Williams and Rae Cassale have put together an invaluable guide to bike trail grants (page 61). Williams spent nearly a decade with the Illinois Department of Transportation as bikeway coordinator before joining Edwards and Kelcey, a Chicago-based design firm, as a bikeway and trail design expert. Cassale worked for state and local governments on bikeway trail planning projects before he, too, joined Edwards and Kelcey. I'm pleased to run their special feature in this issue. It's definitely one to clip and save and use when your district is ready to install or upgrade its bike trails.

Of course, the feature you will use right away is this issue's conference preview and registration form.

I've got to admit that when I first heard about the annual conference, I wondered how IAPD and IPRA members could possibly get enthusiastic about it year after year.

Well, now I know. There just aren't enough days to do it all. Turn to page 23 to get the low down on sessions covering such topics as: autism, aquatic emergency incidents, dealing with difficult parents, employee orientation, ethics, first aid, grant writing, maximizing board effectiveness, national certification exam review, park district finances, park restoration, referenda, sports rage, supervisory skills, tax caps, and teamwork.

There are also sessions on technology, where you could learn about something called "WiFi." But don't get me started on that.
