Best of the best Society presents annual awards at Starved Rock Lodge The Illinois State Historical Society presented more than twenty-five specials awards at its annual Awards Luncheon, held April 19, 2006, at Starved Rock Lodge in Utica. Awards were presented in several categories to recognize the work of Illinois authors and presses, regional museums and historical societies, exhibit designers and interpreters, and genealogists. In addition to the general categories, the Society presented a "Teacher of the Year" award and a "Lifetime Achievement" award to two outstanding Illinois women. The winner of the Illinois State Historical Society's 2006 Teacher of the Year Award was Betsy Brown, an instructor in Curriculum and Instruction at Southern Illinois University and Academic Talent Program Teacher for grades 4 and 5 at Lewis Elementary School in Carbondale. Brown received the award and a check for $500. The Society's "Lifetime Achievement" award went to Patricia Miller, Executive Director of the Illinois Heritage Association, a statewide not-for-profit museum services organization headquartered in Champaign. Founded in 1982, the Association, under Miller's direction, has made outstanding contributions to museum management and preservation of collections around the state. Said ISHS Awards Committee Chair Russell Lewis, "I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award than Pat Miller." Following the "Teacher of the Year" presentation, the Society announced the following awards for 2006: PUBLICATIONS CATEGORY SCHOLARLY ROGER BILES AND "Capturing the fullness of Illinois' history and telling us what it all means is a daunting task by any measure. Professor Roger Biles is to be congratulated for producing a rich and evocative narrative. Written for both students and the general reader, this new history is a welcome and overdue addition that will surely enhance understanding of our fascinating state." WALLACE BEST AND "This innovative interpretation of the religious transformation of Chicago's African-American community during the years of the Great Migration is a fascinating blend of social, urban, and religious history. Best's history of the modernization of southern religious traditions in an urban setting gives us great insight into the evolution of Chicago in the 20th century and the rise of America's black leadership." CARL R. WEINBERG AND "This careful re-examination of the lynching of Robert Prager in 1918 brings into sharp focus the complex relationship of class, community, and national loyalty in time of war. This volume adds immeasurably to our understanding of labor relations and the coal mining industry in Illinois." LEWIS AND CLARK COMMUNITY COLLEGE PROJECT: LEWIS AND CLARK MOBILE INTERPRETIVE CENTER EXHIBITIONS AND AUDIO TOUR AWARD: SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT "This innovative mobile museum, the result of a partnership with the Illinois Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration, traveled throughout the Midwest, raising awareness about and promoting tourism to Illinois sites that were part of this history expedition. Using a variety of historic maps, the exhibition revealed how various groups imagined the continent before and after Lewis and Clark's fabled journey." COLLECTION PRESERVATION HINSDALE HISTORICAL SOCIETY PROJECT: "The remarkable efforts by the Hinsdale Historical Society to save this unique Cotswold home, studio, and garden designed by noted Chicago architect Roscoe Harold Zook, is a compelling story of how to generate widespread public support for preservation and how, literally, to move a building across town to a new location." LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT PATRICIA L. MILLER "Pat Miller is the executive director of the Illinois Heritage Association, a statewide non-profit museum services organization headquartered in Champaign from 1982 to the present. She has a B.A. and M.A. in art history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and she completed the graduate art museology program there too. Pat is a visiting instructor in the historical administration program, History Department, at Eastern Illinois University, where she has taught courses in historic preservation since 1985. Her knowledge of the museum field and the energy she devotes to making Illinois museums better is legendary. Her national reputation has earned her kudos from her peers, as well as important positions with the Association of American Museums and the American Association for State and Local History. Pat is the co-author of two local history books and numerous articles on museum administration and collections management. Her career is a wonderful testament of her dedication to preserving and making more accessible Illinois history."

This beautifully organized and installed exhibition underscores this organization's stellar record of presenting history through compelling programs that reach all age groups." WHITE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY "This compelling history of White County, designed for second and fifth grade students, is a wonderful example of a partnership between a historical society and a local school system. The recreation of a tea party for the second graders in the Robinson-Stewart House—and daily chores in the Masel Cabin for the fifth graders—makes for a memorable experience and a powerful lesson in Illinois history."
