Cover illustration: The Civil War painting, "Road to Shiloh," was drawn by Lt. Frederick Eugene Ransom of the 11th Illinois Infantry. Ransom, who enlisted in Effingham County in 1861, did a series of Civil War sketches. The sketchbook is part of the Illinois State Historical Library's manuscript collection.
