Cover illustrations: James R. Thompson, longest serving governor of Illinois, took time for this photograph at the end of the day on November 6, 1990, the first gubernatorial election in 14 years in which he was not the GOP candidate. In the background is a photograph of Thompson during his first term, 1977-79. He was reelected in 1978, 1982 and 1986. Thompson will end his 14 years as Illinois governor on January 14, 1991, when his successor, Republican Jim Edgar, will be sworn into office. The photographer is Terry Farmer.
