GEORGE H. RYAN
SECRETARY OF STATE
Dear Friends,
A library construction project is an exhausting but exhilarating time for the library community. Whether the project involves remodeling an existing library or the construction of a brand new facility/all types of libraries share similar experiences beginning with the planning process. Illinois "Live & Learn" funds for library construction have aided many public libraries in their building efforts. Although access to electronic resources is increasing library collections without the need to physically house the information, libraries still need inviting and convenient places for their patrons. The ideal public library, as denned in a survey 10 years ago, is a cheerful well-lit building with convenient parking. These characteristics will continue to be very important in the future in addition to maximizing the potential of our emerging role as digital libraries.
Two recent library success stories involving construction of new buildings are covered in this issue. The Danville and Maywood public libraries drew on strong community support to implement their building projects. The efforts of the dedicated library staff and library trustees in these communities culminated in making their construction dreams become reality. It is very difficult to pass any type of property tax referendums anywhere, but the overwhelming success of the Maywood Public Library's bond referendum is encouraging to others.
As State Librarian, I am very interested in success stories in all aspects of library service. The work of the library community in expanding access to information is very important to the state's well being, and I applaud your efforts and ongoing success.
Sincerely,
GEORGE H. RYAN Secretary of State and State Librarian
