About the cover:
On a recent wintry day, La Verne and Boh Malham welcome visitors to their retail orchard business near Carlinville where apples-and their best-in-the-state cider-still were plentiful. Home-based financial independence lured the Malhams to the orchards 17 years ago, and theirs is typical of a growing number of smaller acreage farms springing up in Illinois every year.
