Rack 'em Up
In December 1887, 10 sportsminded friends met to discuss their concerns over the plight of America's wildlife. The vast buffalo herds and millions of passenger pigeons that once inhabited their region were decimated by market hunting. This influential group of hunters recognized that unless efforts were made to control market hunting other wildlife species could be adversely affected.
DNR's program enhances Illinois' reputation as the premier deer hunting state.
|
The meeting was hosted by Theodore Roosevelt during a time when very few organizations were dedicated to the conservation of our natural resources. As a result of that evening, the Boone and Crockett Club was founded to promote two major goals: conservation of wildlife habitat and the principle of fair chase hunting. It is the mission of the Boone and Crockett Club "to promote the guardianship and provident management of big game and associated wildlife in North America and to maintain the highest standards of fair chase and sportsmanship in all aspects of big game hunting, in order that this resource of all the people may survive and prosper in its natural habitats."
In the early 1980s, the Department of Natural Resources began a new program called the Big Buck Recognition Program, patterned after the standards of the Boone and
Crockett Club. BBRP promotes deer hunting, recognizes hunters who take trophy white-tailed deer and lets the world know what Illinoisans have known for a long time-that Illinois is home to some of the healthiest and largest deer on earth.
Scoring of trophy deer is based on standards set up by the Boone and Crockett Club. To qualify for the BBRP, deer taken by firearm must score a minimum of 140 for a typical rack and 160 for a non-typical set of antlers. The minimum scores for deer taken with crossbow or bow and arrow is 115 for typicals and 130 for non-typicals.
Hunters must have their deer scored by official measurers from BBRP, Pope and Young Club or the Boone and Crockett Club. To allow for normal shrinkage of the antlers, measurements cannot be taken until 60 days after the deer is harvested.
Some of the top deer entered in the program during 1999 include Larry Shaw's 188 7/8-inch typical taken with a firearm in Clark County. Daniel Lincoln's buck just missed top billing by one inch with a score of 187 7/8. His deer was taken in Mercer County. Both bucks were shot during the 1998 firearm season.
William Seidel entered a giant non-typical taken during the 1987 firearm season with a score of 239 1/8. John Boshear's big 220 1/8-inch non-typical was the second biggest buck entered in the program last year. It was taken in Iroquois County during the 1998

firearm season. This season also produced a 219 3/8-inch non-typical from Fulton County harvested by Chris Schweigert and a 218 6/8-inch buck from Cass County harvested by Stanley Walker.
Seven bucks with scores greater than 170 inches taken during the 1998 archery season were entered in the archery-typical category last year. Garry Adcock's Hamilton County buck was the largest typical entered in the BBRP during 1999 with a score of 177 0/8. Second place went to Mark Simon with a Will County buck scoring 176 4/8. Mike Foote entered a big 176 1/8-inch buck from Adams County, Ron Wadsworth a 174 6/8-inch buck in Menard County and William Simmons followed closely
with a 174 3/8-inch Randolph County buck. Then came Cliff Perry with a 170 3/8-inch buck from Jo Daviess County and Brad Lundsteen with a 170 0/8-inch typical harvested in Kane County.
Two-hundred-inch non-typical bucks taken with archery equipment are rare, but four hunters managed to register deer of such caliber in the program during 1999. Walter Baker's Jersey County buck was the largest with a score of 216 3/8 inches, Ronald Okonek tagged a big 205 7/8-inch non-typical in Greene County, Rich Humphrey's Macoupin County buck scored 205 3/8 inches, and Joseph Licatesi harvested a 202 3/8-inch buck from Cook County. With the exception of Licatesi's buck, which was taken in 1994, all bucks were killed during the 1998 archery season.
Last year was the first year that bucks harvested with crossbow equipment were entered in the BBRP. In Illinois, crossbows are legal for use by persons with permanent physical disabilities that render them so disabled they are unable to use a conventional bow and arrow device. The Department issues special permits to such persons.
One buck was entered in the non-typical crossbow category by Gerald Rand. His deer came from Boone County and scored 150 0/8 inches. Five typicals were entered, with the top buck scoring 168 6/8 inches. It was taken by Ron Brown in Fulton County.
