Feature Article The Search for Distance Proper shoulder turn and weight shift are the keys
Everyone who plays the game wishes they can hit the golf ball farther. Some spend $500 on a new driver or try a new longer distance golf ball, thinking that is the answer. It is beneficial to get the right equipment in your hands, but most players only need to swing the club to the top of the backswing to achieve longer shots. If you can create a full shoulder turn with good weight shift to the right side, then you have placed yourself in position to deliver the club impact with maximum clubhead speed. At the completion of the backswing your left shoulder should be centered over the right knee. Your right shoulder will have rotated to a position directly behind your head. Combine this with moving 75 to 80 percent of your weight to the right leg and you have achieved an effective wind-up position. Your body motion swings your arms and to increase clubhead speed you must increase the speed your arms swing. One of the most common breakdowns in a golf swing comes from trying to create power by using hands and shoulders. This attempt will frustrate most players as using the hands and shoulders results in a loss of rhythm and feel. Learn to "turn and shift" for maximum power and get on the road for longer drives. •
