On the cover is a Lilliputian's view of a grape hyacinth, a popular
bulb planted last year in eight Chicago "Welcome Gardens." The
Chicago Park District will plant nearly 300,000 different types of
perennial and annual flowers for summer blooms, evidence of a
commitment to beautifying the city through flowers which earned
the district international recognition in Nations in Bloom 2000.
Considered the "Green Oscars," Nations in Bloom is a worldwide
competition that recognizes cities for exemplary environmental
management. Photograph by Brook Collins, Chicago Park District
