To Our Readers:
With this issue of Illinois Heritage we begin our seventh year of publication. Though a toddler to our older sister, the 94-year-old Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, we have our own history and traditions, one of which now is the annual Lincoln Issue you are holding.
Love and rhetoric is the theme of Dan Guillory's "Lincoln and Douglas as suitors," an essay that marries romance and politics in the words of Illinois' quintessential rivals. Richard E. Hart's "Honest Abe and the African Americans' is a distillation of a paper he presented at the annual Abraham Lincoln Symposium several years ago, wherein he explores how black activism in early Springfield informed Lincoln's political views on slavery.
In addition, Ray Cunninghams "Virtue and vice in Homer: The battle for morals in a central Illinois town, 1870-1890" is the story of many Illinois communities in the post-Civil War era, where the war between community standards and economic development was waged more often than not in the streets. Inside you'll also find the latest Society news, "History on-line," our regular departments, as well as a few surprises.
So let it snow. Turn off your cell, grab a blanket, and snuggle up with your Illinois Heritage.
