The 105th annual meeting of the Illinois State Historical Society, held this year in the beautful Fox River Valley, is already a fond memory as we move into the season of summer festivals, rendezvous, and reenactments. It is a time for traveling Illinois, from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Garden of the Gods, with a thousand rest stopsand more than 400 historical markersbetween. When planning your trips this summer, look for these miniature history lessons along the way. To find out where they are, visit the Society's website at www.historyillinois.org.
The May-June issue of Illinois Heritage is all over the Prairie State map too, with armchair adventures to Galena, Chicago, Jacksonville, and several other locales. In "History online," Mark Sorensen
surfs the web for outstanding Illinois outings. Be sure to read our new genealogy column, this one written by Jeanette O'Boyle of Murphysboro, who shares her recent research into DNA testing for family historians. This issue also features one of the Society's newest acquisitionsan 1898 oil portrait of Governor John Peter Altgeldand how that painting has been restored thanks to the generosity of art conservator Barry Bauman.
Explore your Illinois Heritage. Plan your historic adventures now. And keep in mind the Centennial Awards banquet in October and the Illinois History Symposium in December. We'd love to see you there.
