preface

It has been more than five years since an issue of Illinois Libraries has been devoted exclusively to school libraries. For this reason, I agreed to be guest editor and welcomed the opportunity to survey school library media specialists and administrators to share their concerns with all of you. We are happy to include in its entirety the 1983 Recommended Standards for Educational Library Media Programs in Illinois.

I am deeply grateful to the many people who contributed articles for this journal, some on very short notice.

Now enjoy the articles on training, recruiting, and hiring library media specialists; media services and the ESR; media people working together; how-to of closing school libraries; and a futuristic as well as a retrospective look at our profession.

Marie Rose Sivak
Special Guest Editor
