Cover illustration: The World Cup, an 18-carat solid gold trophy, is awarded every four years to the best soccer team in the world. Some of the competition for this trophy will take place in June and July in Chicago, bringing the city an unprecedented marketing opportunity. The trophy was designed by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, who explains: "The lines spring out of the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of victory." Our article about the impact of the World Cup tournament on Chicago and Illinois begins on page 11. The photo of the Chicago skyline is by Terry Farmer in Springfield. The photo of the trophy is from Allsport USA/Photography, Santa Monica, Calif. ©Allsport USA/Photography, 1994. |
