To our readers: With this issue of Illinois Heritage we inaugurate our ninth year of publication. Our thanks to all who have contributed articles over the years and to those who have given Society memberships to new friends of Illinois history. We couldn't fulfill our mission without you. In this issue Loreli Steuer shares the story of Illinois College's connection to the Underground Railroad in Jacksonville; Spencer Range traces the rise and fall of the coal industry in Illinois; Wayne C. Temple introduces us to General Alexander Houston, a forgotten hero of Prairie State history whose portrait hangs in the Old State Capitol; and Drew VandeCreek takes us behind the scenes at Northern Illinois University's Lincoln Digitization Project to show how researchers dig into the past on the Internet. We also share a few highlights from the 26th annual Illinois History Symposium, say goodbye to a dear old friend, and invite you to join us at the 106th Annual Meeting, this year scheduled for April 28-29 at Starved Rock Lodge in Utica. Happy New Year and may 2006 bring you two steps closer to our Prairie State past. William Furry |
