SPECIAL FOCUS

The goal of Third Base is to provide a healthy environment filled with a variety of fun, positive and challenging activities. A daily snack is provided as well as daily homework assistance. Swimming and field trips are scheduled for additional fun. Every effort is made to keep a 1:10 leader/ child ratio at the program's three sites, which service the area's seven public schools.

Buffalo Grove Park District "Clubhouse"

The Clubhouse before- and after-school program serves 500 children at seven schools sites within three school districts. Providing safe childcare is the primary purpose, but we also provide trips (e.g., fishing at Green lake, Funway Entertainment Center, Wheeling Aquatic Center, Blackberry Farm) on holidays and teacher institute days.

Carbondale Park District "Kids Korner"

Kids Korner is a DCFS-licensed childcare program eligible only to children whose parents both work during after-school hours, are full-time college students or children from single parent households. Care and guidance are provided in a supervised setting in which children choose from outdoor play, organized games, arts and crafts, enrichment activities, homework and quiet time.

Carbondale Park District "Alice Wright Early Childhood Center"

The Alice Wright Early Childhood Center, a DCFS-licensed program, was established in 1985 in the belief that a wide variety of social and educational experiences provide needed stimuli in the growth of a child's mind and character. This professional and child-oriented center offers an environment of love and acceptance, social situations into which she/he can learn to adapt comfortably, and provides new experiences that enable a child to grow emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually.

Channahon Park District "Leisure Land"

This after-school program offers games, crafts, and time to work on homework in a supervised setting.

Crystal Lake Park District "Extended time"

Extended Time (ET) is offered in every Crystal Lake elementary school, plus the kindergarten program runs from 6:30 a.m. to noon or noon to 6 p.m. Breakfast and a snack are provided. Activities include arts and crafts, group games, sports, board games and time for homework. Because ET operates in the schools, no transportation is needed for kids involved in after-school clubs or sports. They simply sign in and out of ET to attend school-related programs.

Deerfield Park District "After School Club"

The After School Club gives boys and girls the chance to enjoy the friendship of other children in a fun, safe environment while under the supervision of experienced staff. Supervisors take a personal interest in each child and plan activities that will help youngsters to grow and develop emotionally, socially and physically. Activities include games, art, music, dramatics, outdoor fun, or quiet time for reading and homework.

Elmhurst Park District "Recreation Station"

The Recreation Station is a cooperative before- and after-school program between the Elmhurst Park District and School District #205. The program sites are at four schools, and students from other schools are bused to a site. Scholarship assistance is available as well as family rates. The type of program offered is very relaxed and recreational in nature. Children choose from outdoor play, organized games, arts and crafts, enrichment activities, a place to do homework and a place to visit with their friends. Field trips, both within and outside of Elmhurst, are planned, especially on public school institute days.

Fox Valley Park District/District 131 "After School program"

This new pilot program is a partnership with three junior high schools within the Fox Valley Park District. The program is structured into three levels for the entire year. The first phase offers after-school soccer for 8 weeks, culminating with games between schools and a citywide tournament. The second phase offers after-school dance for 12 weeks, followed by an 8-week softball program during the spring. The pilot was very successful, and plans are being made next year to introduce an arts program in the junior highs. The program was free to the students and costs a total outlay of $50,000.

Hazel Crest Park District "Kids with a Positive Attitude"

This after-school recreational program provides a wide variety of activities, including sports, arts and crafts, games, quiet activities, homework help, mentoring and field trips.

Hickory Hills Park District "Games Galore"

This after-school sports program offers a variety of games, which are played in Krueger Park gym. All participants pay $1 each day before entering the gym and all activities are supervised by an adult.
